Should You Have an Indoor or Outdoor Photo Shoot?

For so many families, this time of year around the holidays is full of photos. After all, the whole family is together (a rare occasion for many families) and dressed up, and you’re feeling especially appreciative of each other so you want to capture these special times together. If all of this has you thinking about doing a professional photo shoot, I’m here to help!

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want an indoor photo shoot or an outdoor photo shoot. It’s all a matter of preference, but there are pros and cons for each one.

Benefits of Outdoor Photography

Typically, outdoor photography is the most popular choice among my clients, although it can vary from season to season. And I know exactly why so many of my clients love these portraits.

Capturing the Beauty of the Outdoors

Just looking around at the stunning natural beauty we have all around us in the Seattle area will show you why many of my photo shoots are outdoors. It makes for effortlessly beautiful backdrops for any photo shoot, whether it’s for family portraits, maternity photos, or senior photos.

Flexible Location Options

When we do indoor photography, of course, our locations are pretty limited - it’ll either be at my Mercer Island photo studio or, in some cases when it’s the right fit, at your home. But the options are practically infinite for an outdoor photo shoot.

We have the advantage here in Washington of having so many lovely natural settings, like beaches and water, woodsy scenes, and more, not to mention the options for cityscapes in Seattle or rustic settings around the area. Whatever type of outdoor aesthetic you’re looking for, chances are that we can find it.

Benefits of Indoor Photography

While many of my clients choose outdoor settings for personal photo shoots, my photo studio sees plenty of action as well, especially for my branding photography clients and newborn photo shoots. Indoor photography is an option for any type of photo shoot, and it has a few advantages to offer.

More Control Over the Look

As gorgeous as the outdoors are, having your photo shoot indoors gives us full control over the look of your photos. I can tailor the lighting exactly the way we want, create a customized aesthetic scene based on your vision, and use all the tools at my disposal to cultivate a look that’s uniquely you. While I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve for outdoor photography too, my studio does offer more direct control.

Convenience in Any Weather

This one is more of a practical benefit, but for indoor photography, you won’t have to worry about whether the weather cooperates on the day of your photo shoot. You can choose your wardrobe without worrying about the temperature outside, you can choose your footwear without questioning whether the ground will be too soft for your heels, and you don’t have to worry about making a contingency plan in case the weather is truly terrible.

Planning Your Seattle Photo Session

While both outdoor photo shoots and indoor photo shoots have their advantages, the bottom line is that, in either setting, I’ll be able to create beautiful photos that will become special heirlooms for your family for generations.
