Tips for Urban Photo Shoots IN SEATTLE

They didn’t want a standard maternity session. They wanted something unique to them and we picked where they first met.

One of my favorite parts of being a Mercer Island photographer is that I’m surrounded by so many different photo shoot opportunities and settings. There are beaches, there are forests, there are quaint fields, and there are Seattle cityscapes and charming small towns, so I have so many options at my fingertips to create the best photo shoot for every client’s vision.

If you love the look of a photoshoot in town, either in a chic city environment or in a sweet small town, I’ve got you! Explore these tips for enjoying and getting the most out of your urban photo shoot.

Find Some Inspo Pictures

When we’re hitting the town for your photo shoot, there are so many different looks we can find within just a few blocks of each other. With so many options available, it helps if you have an idea of the general look or vibe you want your photos to have. Whether we’re taking branding photos or headshots, maternity portraits, or senior photos, try to find a few pictures that have the look you’re going for. And don’t worry, we’ll chat about all of this while planning your photo shoot too.

Make Sure Your Outfits Fit the Loo

Speaking of having a targeted look for your custom portraits, make sure that you have that vision in mind as you’re choosing your outfit. A dress that looks stunning for photos that are in a field of flowers might look out of place amid skyscrapers or industrial backgrounds.

I know it’s tough to find outfits that you love, that capitalize on your best features, and that fit a particular style. That’s why I’m here to help! When you book your photo session with me, it includes detailed and guided planning including styling and choosing outfits, so I’ll help you find the perfect options.

Embrace Imperfection

Part of the appeal of urban portraits is that you’re not in a perfectly curated, manicured studio. You’re out in the real world, and this gives your photos authenticity, showing you in your real-life environment. Part of that means embracing some imperfection in the background as part of the aesthetic. There might be people walking in the distance, maybe buildings behind you have different colors of shades or they have some shades drawn and others open. While we’re on site, I’ll make sure to frame your photos in a way that makes you the star regardless, with the world in the background simply setting the stage for you.

Trust the Process!

Sometimes the best portraits in an urban environment are taken at an angle that might surprise you, or a pose that doesn’t feel natural. But that’s exactly why you’ve hired a professional photographer: to tell you what looks good on camera! Just roll with it and trust my guidance. We can look at your photos throughout the session so you can see how they look and let me know what you like and what you don’t like, and we’ll have plenty of shots so you’ll have many favorites to choose from.
