Tips for a Newborn Photo Shoot in Your Home
A newborn photo shoot in your own home can be a beautiful way to memorialize your first days at home with your precious new baby, celebrate the new chapter in your life, and create special memories as a family. How can you make this photo shoot go smoothly for a stress-free day?
It starts with hiring the right photographer, of course. As a Seattle area photographer who specializes in newborn photography and the motherhood journey, I’ve done countless newborn photo shoots in clients’ homes, so I know exactly how to make the experience a wonderful one and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.
Don’t Go Overboard with Your Cleaning
Some of my newborn photography clients worry about getting their home camera-ready while they’re caring for a newborn, and as a mom of three, I absolutely get it! I would never expect your home to be immaculate. The good news is that when I do a home photo shoot, we’ll take all the portraits in just a few areas of the home, so those are the only areas you need to prepare.
We’ll have a consultation while planning your photo session, ideally in your home, so I can see which areas have the best lighting and aesthetic for the photo shoot. This way, you’ll know which few rooms or areas you need to have ready, and you don’t have to put in hours cleaning the whole house.
Have a Plan for Your Baby’s Siblings
If you have other little ones at home with your newborn, we’ll capture some adorable moments between the siblings, but we’ll also want a lot of time with your other kids out of the room so we can take your newborn’s solo portraits in a quiet atmosphere that lulls them to sleep. Depending on your kids’ ages and whether or not they can play on their own, it might be helpful to have a grandparent, family friend, or sitter during the session who can keep an eye on them after we’ve finished their portraits, letting you and your spouse be present with your newborn.
Turn Up Your Thermostat
Making the house a little warmer than usual can help to make your baby sleepier, which allows for a smoother session with fewer soothe breaks and it lets us capture more of those precious sleepy poses that every parent loves. This is especially helpful for keeping your baby comfortable during nude or diaper-only portraits.
